Backstory
The smaller, the better. I used Shōrty as a remote head on a car commercial – it even passed through the space between the front seats! It now fits into a TENBA Car Case CC22.
I wanted a gimbal specifically sized for my camera setup. As a RED user from the very beginning and an owner of a RED V-Raptor, the original gimbal simply felt too large. So I decided to create a smaller version without compromising any of the original features.
The Mōvi is a great gimbal and has remained almost unchanged (aside from software updates) for nearly 10 years. It was designed around camera dimensions of that time – and cameras have evolved significantly since then.
If you are a camera operator who frequently switches between different setups, this product is probably not for you.
In standing mode, you can even leave a monitor mounted on the camera, as the half-cage design leaves the top of the camera completely free.Reversible Shōrty
This kit includes several CNC-milled parts. It is fully reversible to the original configuration. All parts can be exchanged by the user without permanent modification (except for the ring, see below).
Roll Axis Arm
The core component of Shōrty. At 280 mm, it is 40% shorter than the original. It features a symmetrical design and provides 1/4″-20 UNC threads with locating pin holes on both sides for attaching NATO rails. This allows easy balancing using NATO-based counterweights.
Twin Bracket
- Single-piece design
- Holds four rods at the original width
- Significantly more rigid than the original brackets
Arri Dovetail
Flat ARRI-standard dovetail that mounts directly to the gimbal.
Ring Grip
These tubes are essential for reassembling the shortened ring. They feature a simple horizontal grip pattern (the product image shows a different pattern).
Shrinking the Ring
Shrinking the Pro Ring is the only irreversible modification.
The ring must be cut into four pieces. Heat the aluminum parts to remove the remaining carbon tube sections. Measure very precisely to ensure the batteries do not interfere with the ring, then reassemble everything using two-component epoxy adhesive.
If you also want to shorten the rotating axis vertically (where the main control unit is mounted), you will need to drill new holes in the rods for cable routing.
